The Hand Chakras
Hand ChakrasMost people are familiar with the 7 chakras that run up the center of the body, but there are minor chakras as well, such as the hand chakras. Even though they are considered as secondary chakras, the energy centers located in the palm of our hands are powerful tools of perception and healing. Healers appreciate the quality of energy flowing through their hand chakras, but also anyone, with a little awareness of energy, can grasp the importance of these centers.
Where are the Hand Chakras?
Hands are the centers for multiple chakras. The primary chakras are located in the center of each palm. Others are said to be located at each joint, which make hands particularly useful channels for energy healing. The palm chakras are the focal point for the hand meridians.
Healers have differing views on how to classify the hand chakras; some see them as primary chakras, others consider them as concentrated energetic fields in charge of transmitting energy from other chakras. For instance, healing work often involves the hands as primary means to feel, give, and receive energy. Healers may channel energy through and from other chakras, such as the root chakra and earth energy, or heart chakra and love.
Function of the Hand Chakras
Just like the other chakras, the centers of energy location in your hands are what allow you to interact with the world on an energetic level. They allow healing energy to flow both in and out and are associated with the act of giving and receiving.
Healthy hand chakras manifest as openness, creativity and confidence as you move through the world. They are usually associated with the color red or gold, although their shade and radiance may vary depending on the type of channeled energy.
Signs that your hand chakras may be blocked include:
Lack of creativity and inability to express yourself artistically
Feeling closed off or numb
Lack of connection with the world and with other people
Hand Chakras and Energy Healing
Open hand chakras are essential for energy healing. If they are blocked or imbalanced, energy flow from the healer will be weak or inconsistent. Reiki and other energy healing modalities use hand positions to help energy get where it is needed, but blocked hand chakras make that difficult.
For self-healing, the same problems arise. Blocked hand chakras create a closed system rather than an open one, preventing energy from flowing freely through your body and getting where it needs to go. In addition, chakra hand positions, or mudras, can help balance the major chakras in the body. Blocked hand chakras will prevent these mudras from being effective.
How to Open the Hand Chakras
There are several methods for opening your hand chakras. One of the simplest is simply holding your hands in water. If possible, use a natural body of water such as a stream or a lake, but a bowl of water will work. As you let your hands rest, imagine the water gently washing away any blockages you might have and replacing them with bright, flowing energy.
Another useful exercise comes from Reiki. To begin, hold your hands with your palms touching each other and gently rub them together. Imagine a glow forming in the palms of your hands. After a moment, slowly bring your hands a few inches apart, still imagining a glowing ball of energy emanating from your palms. Feel the energy. You may feel warmth or tingling as you play with this energy. Move your hands around a bit, letting the energy move and grow. Imagine it flowing from each palm. Finally, bring your palms back together and allow the energy to flow back into your body, healing and energizing you.
Creating art is also excellent for opening chakras. Using your hands will help get creative energy moving through them. Hands-on methods like sculpting are especially good.
Balancing chakras takes time and consistent practice, but these exercises can be done in a few minutes a day. Regular focus on the rest of the chakra system will also help with balancing your hand chakras. Using mudras or Reiki hand positions during your meditation will allow you to work on your hand chakras while healing and balancing other parts of your body.
What this exercise does, when done consistently is to establish an energy circuit within the hand chakras. This energy can be used for healing, opening other chakras, applying energy or as with Dim Mak, the "death touch." It also helps with telekinesis (moving objects with one's mind and pyrokinesis (setting objects on fire using the powers of the mind and aura). In order to advance with these gifts, a powerful aura is needed to act on the auras of objects.
This exercise should be done at least once a day to get your energy flowing freely through your hand chakras.
Sit comfortably and relax. Try to go into a trance as the deeper the trance and level of concentration, the better the results, especially when beginning this exercise. After an energy current within the hand chakras is open and flowing, this can be done anywhere at will.
Put your hands facing each other, fingertips almost touching and relaxed. (Your fingers can be slightly bent as in the illustration).
With the pad of your thumb, press into the palm of each of your hands, right in the hollow part.
Now, focus intensly upon your hands, especially your palms. Feel the area you pressed in with your thumb.
Keep focusing all of your concentration and begin to feel a warm glow and energy between your palms.
Begin to move your hands an inch or two apart slowly and back again to where your fingertips are almost touching. Try to feel the energy between the palms of your hands. The more you practice and the stronger your energy becomes, keep moving your hands in and out, further and further apart until you can feel your energy as far apart as two or more feet.
Now, visualize a ball of white hot fire like the sun as in the picture above. Later on, you can use colors. Feel the heat and energy from this ball of fire between your hands. This may feel as a tingling or throbbing. For some people, it may even feel cold. The important thing is to get this energy flowing and to *feel* it.
Now let your arms hang down and relax. Focus on energy flowing down your arms into your hands. This may feel tingly and your lower arms and hands may feel pumped. This is a sign the enrgy is flowing. Now repeat steps 5-7 above.
Do the above exercise 4 times.
This exercise should be done every day for as long as it takes to really open your hand chakras and establish a permanent flow of energy. With the proper practice, you should be able to feel powerful energy between your hands when your hands are more than a foot apart.
After you have accomplished a strong energy field in your hands, practice extending this energy to your fingertips to open your fingertip chakras.
Hand chakras, though small, are important to your wellbeing. Our hands are receptive, taking things that are given to us. They are also giving. They are expressive of our moods, communicating our needs, desires and ideas – but did you know that there are chakras in the hands?
When we talk about the chakras we typically refer to the seven main chakras, but do not discount these ‘lesser chakras’ simply because of that. The chakras in your palms are not so much centers for storing energy like the seven main chakras are, but more channels through which energy can pass back and forth. The chakras in your hands are directly related to the balance of your heart chakra. Keeping your hand chakras healthy is very important to the overall balance of your chakra system.
Signs of Healthy Hand Chakras
When your hand and heart chakras are properly balanced and connected, you can control the outward flow of heart chakra energy through the palms of your hands. Here are some signs that show these chakras are balanced with each other.
You find it easy to openly and clearly convey your thoughts and ideas to others.
You are receptive and open to the ideas of others even if they do not mirror your own.
Being able to give and care unconditionally.
Being able to receive humbly as opposed to compulsively or greedily. What comes with these traits is your ability to receive gifts, knowledge, advice, etc, from others in a positive way. You will also be able to share and give to others without coming off as overbearing, insulting or stirring up guilt in another.
You have a flair for creativity and rarely suffer from lulls in inspiration (writer’s block, etc.).
You welcome praise and validation from others for your work (in a spirit of acknowledging and honoring your talents, meaning your self-esteem and self-worth are high), but you do not require praise or validation to bolster your self-worth.
If you find yourself lacking in any or all of these there may be unhealthy imbalances in your heart and hand chakras as well as discrepancies in the connections between the two. This can cause you to feel closed off from others and even closed off from yourself. You will find it hard to feel positive in varying situations and your communicative abilities can be lacking.
Not to despair, though. There are simple methods you can do to help restore balance to the hand chakras and repair the connection between them and your heart chakra. Read on for a deep explanation of a simple, everyday healing method.
A Simple Technique to Open Your Hand Chakras
Hold your hands level with your solar plexus, the left overlapping the right, but not touching each other. Keeping both palms facing up, the fingers of your left hand point to the right while the fingers of your right hand point to the left.
1. Take a few deep, relaxing breaths and focus your intentions on opening up the hand chakras.
2. Now begin to open and close both hands. Do this quickly, but not uncomfortably. You want to be able to repeat this as many times as you can, but you do not want your hands to become worn out. Concentrate on making a loose fist rather than a clenched one.
3. Now reverse so that your right hand is on the top and the left is on the bottom. Do not change the directions that your hands are facing, simply their placement over each other. Be sure to keep the palms facing up.
Maintain the openness of your hand chakras every day.4. Repeat step three for both hands again.
5. Now bring your hands to chest height and put them into prayer position. The palms should be gently pressed together with all corresponding fingers touching as they extend straight upward.
6. Rub your palms together for 6 seconds or so as though you are trying to warm them.
7. This next step can either be said aloud or thought to yourself. It depends on whether your physical voice or mental voice carries more weight with you at the time. Say or think the word “open” then clap your hands together 3 times.
8. Finally, hold your hands at chest height again, but keep them slightly apart from each other. Focus on the sensations you are now feeling in each hand. Concentrate on and allow yourself to feel the energy that passes between your palms. It is often described as a tingling and warming sensation. This exercise has physically stimulated the circulation in your hands which allows for the energy to be efficiently channeled for use.
Variations on the Technique
You can create your own variations to the technique and still get great results. For example, it is more comfortable for some to keep their hands in their lap. Try that if keeping your hands at heart level brings discomfort. You can also try the prayer pose with your arms raised above your head. This can even bring some connection with the crown and third eye chakras.
Incorporate hand chakra healing into daily meditation. However you find that this technique works best, be sure you give yourself a few minutes each day to practice this. You can do this technique more than once in any given meditation session or simply do it whenever you feel the need to open your heart chakra.
