Chakra Blocks Using Touch
Touch therapy, in some form, can help all chakras.Of the many thousands of ways to clear and balance the chakras, touch is probably the least discussed. Meditation, visualization, yoga, aromatherapy, sound therapy (including mantras), color therapy, crystals, and herbal therapies all have their place. Each modality works best on certain chakras, and this includes the “touch” therapies such as massage.
The more energetic or ethereal chakras – the crown and the brow chakras – will respond better to non-physical healing such as meditation while the lower chakras, which are more physical in nature, will respond better to physical healing including touch.
If you think of your chakras in terms of a pyramid, you can see that the base is very wide and by its nature, it has to be denser and more grounded in order to support the chakras above it. The root chakra in particular is very dense energy, which makes it much more difficult to clear than the upper chakras. In fact, its very nature as a “base” makes it particularly resistant to change. Think about how quickly a house would disintegrate without the stability of a solid foundation!
Each chakra is associated with certain elements and energies:
First chakra: smell/earth
Second chakra: taste/water
Third chakra: sight/fire
Fourth chakra: touch/air
Fifth chakra: hearing/sound
Sixth chakra: “sixth sense”/intuition/light
Seventh chakra: this chakra is not actually in the body; it is unrelated to the physical/sensory world, so it has no sensory associations
This article is about touch therapy – and here is how you can use therapeutic touch on each of the chakras.
The first chakra responds “somewhat” to touch therapy. In this case, physical activity helps move stagnant energy around (“get things going”) but it doesn’t require touch of another person, but rather YOU touching the Earth. Any sport or activity that involves touching the earth, will benefit you: running, yoga, rock climbing and hiking; for “recovery” days, gardening or leisurely walking will still connect you physically to the Earth.
Intimate touch is a great healing therapy! The second chakra, which is still very dense and physical, touch is very important. It is a sexual/sensual chakra, so yes, sex is a great healer for this one! You can also use the sensory experience of water to heal this chakra: swimming, soaking in a hot springs and bubble baths are great ways to sink into the sensual nature of the second chakra.
Moving up from the physical, denser lower chakras, the third chakra is also a “touch” chakra except that in this case, it’s not earth, nor water, but sunlight that does the healing. Allow yourself to be sun-kissed for at least a few minutes every day. If there’s no sunlight available, try fire: sitting by a crackling fire in the fireplace or woodstove, is incredibly soothing and warming.
The fourth chakra, heart, definitely responds to physical touch. All humans thrive on touch. Humans need touch for emotional health! If you’re feeling alone, schedule a massage. Pets also help in this area – many studies prove that pets help lower blood pressure, and who can resist the gentle vibes of a cat’s purr?
The higher three chakras are less influenced by physical touch. However, the throat chakra is healed by sound, and sound can have a very tactile feel. If you’ve ever held a Tibetan bowl and felt its resonance, or chanted “Om” and felt the vibration in your throat and even in your heart, you have already experienced the “touch” of sound.
For the brow chakra, think “emotional touch” instead or physical touch: mentally send positive, loving “vibes” to your loved ones. Picture their face… picture them smiling and feeling happy and loved, and mentally send them a smile, love and appreciation.
And finally, for the crown chakra, imagine that you are part of an infinite ocean of consciousness – no surface, no bottom, no shores… and yet you can feel its comforting embrace (like a child sinking into her mother’s arms), warmth, and its compassionate and unconditional love. Radiate that feeling outward from yourself.
Again, there are many, many ways to heal and balance the chakras, and you can incorporate touch into healing them all (with a little creativity)!
